polyurethane (PU) foams aka Styrofoams

Objective : To make polyurethane (PU) foams out of Polyether based polyol and phenylmethane diisocyanate or MDI, with three drops of water

Material and tools used

Polyether based polyol – Part A
Diphenylmethane diisocyanate or MDI – Part B
Paper Cups
Wooden stirring rods
newspaper

Disposable rubber gloves
Measuring cylinders
Plastic ruler
Pen knife
Weighing balance
Measuring cylinders
Plastic ruler
Pen knife
Weighing balance
Mask
Dropper
Universal tensile machine
Fume hood

Steps in experiment

Making the Foams

1.      Wear gloves, goggles and mask
2.      Spread a paper towel or a piece of newspaper flat on the bench top of the fume hood.
3.      Measure 20 g of Part A in an empty paper cup.
4.      Drop 3 drops of distilled water into the cup containing Part A.
5.      Stir Part A and the water together.
6.      Measure 20 g of Part B in an empty paper cup. 
7.      Pour A and B into another empty cup and stir till the colour of the mixture is consistent.
8.      Leave the mixture in the fume hood for ½ hour to cure.  


Thats how u make styroforms.. I am going mad with science!!
