Gaming addiction

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Gaming addiction has become a serious problem in our society. Teenagers from age 13 and above may encounter such a problem in their lives.

Having done a simple research on gamers (hardcore gamers, cutie gamers and gamers) and presenting my team's work in the ASEAN Peer Convention II in KL. The team found out that male teenagers from 16-19 years old gets easily addicted to online gaming. There are many reason such as power hunger (want to bring their character in the game onto another level), using the characters in game to help them earn some quick cash, trying to get a girlfriend, peer influence and many more.

Gaming addiction may cause serious damage to a individual. Such as personal relationships. People enter into relationships for intimacy, closeness, and with the expectations of meeting one another’s needs. Any behavior that shuts one partner out and disrupts the primary bond is a problem. If computer gaming becomes habitual and uncontrollable it is apt to cause severe impairment in primary relationships.

Computer gaming can be especially problematic because the virtual world is accessible 24/7; game play can continue endlessly, day or night, and because there are so many reinforcers structured into many games there’s tremendous incentive to keep playing. You can’t put the game on “pause” to go share dinner with the family.

From there couples are going to become upset. Initially there’s a feeling of loss which quickly moves to frustration, then anger. Positive communication ceases and the overall tone of the relationship becomes negative. And thats how gaming addiction is able to kill a relationship.

Another example would be killing. Many news reported that teenagers especially in America had been killing for vengeance. Because they either get cheated in their games or they have been insulted for being a newbie.

Therefore, do you feel preoccupied with the Internet (think about previous on-line activity or anticipate next on-line session)?

Do you feel the need to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction?

Have you repeatedly made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop Internet use?

Do you feel restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop Internet use?

Do you stay on-line longer than originally intended?

Have you jeopardized or risked the loss of significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the Internet?

Have you lied to family members, therapist, or others to conceal the extent of involvement with the Internet?

Do you use the Internet as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a dysphoric mood (e.g., feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)?

If you have answers "yes" to five or more of the above questions is considered to have Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD). And i strongly recommend you to seek help from someone whom you trust.
